
The Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has called for decentralization of the Police Force and immediate implementation of community policing nationwide.
Mr. Egbetokun made the call at the Maiden Distinguished Alumni Lecture of Centre for Peace and Security Studies, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
IGP Egbetokun however emphasized the need for adequate funding and capacity building of officers to be deployed for community policing and also clearly defined roles for the decentralized Police Force.
He highlighted legislative reform, community engagement, inter-agency collaboration, deployment of technology, accountability, and capacity building for effective policing in Nigeria.
The Inspector General of Police affirmed that with effective policing, peace, security and overall well being of Nigerians could be guaranteed.
He, however, stressed the need for synergy amongst all stakeholders for a holistic approach.
IGP Egbetokun maintained that active participation of the public, media, traditional and religious institutions in crime prevention and reporting would create a more robust security framework.
Earlier, in an address of welcome, the Chief Host and Vice Chancellor, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Professor Noah Yusuf, described the lecture as timely and urged all stakeholders to be committed to result-oriented policing for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
