The National President of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Abdulmumini Ayo Abdulmalik, has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Major-General Abdullahi Mohammed, GCON, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
General Mohammed passed away in Abuja in the early hours of Wednesday, November 5, 2025, after an illness associated with old age.
Alhaji Abdulmalik described the late General’s death as a monumental loss, not only to the Ilorin Emirate but also to Nigeria and humanity at large. He lamented that the nation lost a tested statesman at a time when his wisdom and experience were most needed to steer the country through its current challenges.
According to the statement, the late General Mohammed, who died at the age of 86, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s history and was among the patriots who fought to preserve the unity of the nation.
Alhaji Abdulmalik noted that the deceased was the first indigene of Ilorin to serve as a governor and the first to attain the rank of a two-star General in the Nigerian Armed Forces — pioneering several distinguished roles in public service.
He further recalled that General Mohammed also served as National Security Adviser during the last military administration and later became the first and longest-serving Chief of Staff to the President, holding the position throughout President Obasanjo’s administration and briefly under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
The IEDPU President commended the late General for his consistent support for community and national development, recalling that he generously sponsored the printing of the Union’s annual calendar for several years. He added that General Mohammed was a dependable figure whom the Union regularly consulted on matters requiring intervention at both state and national levels.
Alhaji Abdulmalik extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, over the loss of this illustrious son of Ilorin.
He also condoled with the Alfanla Atotileto family of Adangba and the entire Ilorin Emirate on the demise of their great son.
Alhaji Abdulmalik prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, reward his good deeds with Aljanat Firdaus, and grant his widow, children, associates, and colleagues the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
