The Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED) has renewed its campaign to increase the participation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), urging female students to embrace technical education as a pathway to national development.
The renewed commitment was made during the National Coordinating Committee meeting of the organisation hosted by Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
The Kwara State Coordinator of WITED, Engr. Kainde Olorunfemi, encouraged female students to believe in their abilities, pursue excellence and take advantage of opportunities in STEM.
She said the organisation remains committed to empowering girls through technical education and skills development, noting that their talents, ideas and determination are vital to Nigeria’s future.
National Coordinator of WITED, Princess Regina Amadi, commended the management of Kwara State Polytechnic for supporting the organisation’s activities.
She explained that WITED was established in 1988 by the Commonwealth Association of Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA), now the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA), to address the low participation of girls in science and technical education across African polytechnics and colleges of technology.
The Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, represented by the Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Awolola Felicia Olabisi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to initiatives that promote inclusive technical education and pledged continued support for WITED’s programmes.
Delivering the guest lecture, “Home Maker and Hustler: Building a Peaceful Home After Work,” Dr. Habeebah Adams urged women to balance career aspirations with family responsibilities, stressing that both goals can be achieved through commitment, proper planning and discipline.
