A woman has shared a detailed account on Facebook alleging that her marriage collapsed following a dispute over an inheritance of nearly ₦35 million left to her by her late father. According to her, her husband was aware of the inheritance process and, after the money was released, asked how she intended to use it.
She said she planned to buy land, purchase a car, enrol for a master’s degree and invest the remaining funds in her business.
She alleged that her husband became upset after learning of her plans and questioned what role he would play in managing the money. According to her, he later insisted that she should entrust the entire inheritance to him because he was her husband.
The woman claimed the disagreement escalated into a heated argument during which he allegedly threatened her and warned that he could marry another woman if she refused to submit to his wishes.
She further alleged that her husband’s parents later visited their home unannounced and urged her to transfer the money to their son, insisting that she was being disobedient.
To avoid further confrontation, she said she agreed to do so the following day but instead left the house with her baby and sought refuge at a friend’s residence.
According to her, her mother later joined her to help care for the child while she secured a new apartment.
She subsequently returned to the matrimonial home in her husband’s absence to move out her personal belongings and items she said she had purchased with her own income.
The woman alleged that her husband later reported her to the police, accusing her of taking his property. However, she claimed she presented records from her office cooperative savings scheme showing that the household items had been purchased through salary deductions, while her husband was unable to provide proof of ownership.
She said she subsequently filed for divorce. According to her, her husband later began pleading for reconciliation, claiming he had only made the threats to make her “more submissive.”
The woman stated that the divorce proceedings are now before the court.
The claims were made by the woman in a Facebook post and have not been independently verified.
