Kwara State House of Assembly has passed a motion on the need to create awareness on indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage system and mitigate flooding.

The motion was moved by Mr. Yinusa Oniboki, from Afon Constituency and was seconded by Mr. Lawal Ayansola Salihu Ipaye/Malete/Oloru.

Mr. Oniboki, in a debate, noted that the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage system has reached a crisis point in many communities.

He stated that the matter is not just an eyesore but a threat to public heath and the environmental impact of the practice cannot be overstated because the overflowing drainage during the rainy season can lead to floods, damaging property and infrastructure as witnessed in the last few days.

Mr. Oniboki noted that Mallam Abdulrahaman Abdulrasaq’s administration prioritized environmental sanitation, including clearing of blocked drainage system across the State.

He acknowledged the effort of the Governor at ensuring that all newly constructed roads in the State are designed with functional drainage systems, thereby promoting the durability of infrastructure and mitigating the impact of flooding.

Other Lawmakers who spoke on the matter qoated the Nigeria Meteorological Agency that Kwara State over the years, remained one of the States vulnerable to flooding, especially during the raining season and called for a change of attitude by Kwarans in order to change the narrative.

Meanwhile, the House, in a resolution read by the Speaker, urged the Governor to direct the Ministry of Environment to fully equip and empower Enviromental Health Officers to strictly enforce the provisions of the Environmental Sanitation Law.

The Lawmakers also called on the residents to desist from dumping of refuse into drainage systems whenever it rains.
