Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged the United Nations to undertake far-reaching reforms that would give Africa a stronger voice in global governance, declaring that the continent must no longer remain on the sidelines of decisions affecting its future.
Delivering Nigeria’s national statement on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Shettima said the world body must reflect present-day realities by granting Africa permanent representation on the UN Security Council.
He told world leaders that, “Africa can no longer remain a spectator in decisions that shape its destiny,” as he renewed Nigeria’s support for comprehensive reforms of the global institution.
The Vice President also called for a fairer international economic order, saying developing countries needed improved access to development finance, debt relief and investment to achieve sustainable growth.
On security, Shettima urged stronger international cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that lasting peace was essential for development across Nigeria and the African continent.
He further appealed for greater global support in addressing climate change, insisting that vulnerable nations should not bear the burden of a crisis they contributed least to, while calling for stronger partnerships in technology, education and digital innovation.
The address marks the third consecutive year that Shettima has represented President Tinubu at the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
