The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports that its personnel shot a motorcyclist during an incident at Oyun Bridge in Ilorin, describing the claims circulating on social media as misleading.
The Command said the incident occurred during a routine patrol and stop-and-search operation when a 23-year-old motorcyclist, Abdurasaq Lukman, allegedly rode at high speed and knocked down a police officer.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the officer, Corporal Saka Azeez, sustained serious head injuries and a fracture, while the motorcyclist also suffered minor injuries.
She said officers at the scene immediately conveyed both the injured policeman and the motorcyclist to a medical facility for treatment.
According to the Command, Lukman was treated and discharged but remained in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while Corporal Azeez continued to receive medical attention and was scheduled for further examinations and scans.
The Police stressed that no person was shot during the incident, contrary to claims accompanying a video circulating on social media.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Adekimi Ojo, urged members of the public to verify information before sharing unconfirmed reports capable of causing unnecessary anxiety and tension.
