A Non-Governmental Organization, Kwara Development Advocacy Group (KWADAG), has called on Nigerians to embrace constructive engagement on issues affecting society to promote good governance and accountability.
The Executive Director of the group, Prince Surajudeen Abiodun Adisa, made the call in Ilorin at a seminar organized by the group with the theme: “Public Policy Discourse and Citizen Engagement: Strengthening Accountability Through Constructive Participation.”
Prince Adisa, who noted that democracy does not end at the ballot box, stressed the need for meaningful participation long after voting.
He urged citizens to understand government policies, follow government programmes and projects, and engage government institutions through appropriate channels rather than resorting to mere criticism.
A resource person, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Agboro, advised citizens to track facts about constituency projects from the government budget, monitor their execution, and embrace a spirit of ownership of projects sited in their communities.
In his remay, the Deputy Coordinator, Nigeria Network for Sustainable Development, N-NETSUD Kwara State Chapter, Comrade Lanre Osho, called on the people to properly search for government projects domiciled in their localities before engaging government institutions through the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act.
Comrade Osho also urged the citizens to embrace constructive criticism, rather than confronting the government without facts and Figures, emphasising that if all citizens are informed and ready to embrace dialogue with those at corridor of power Nigeria will be a better place for all.
Comrade Osho thereafter commended KWADAG for the programme, which he said would serve as an eye-opener to citizens on their rights and responsibilities to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance.
