Residents of Kwara State have been charged to be at alert and guard against the heat waves predicted to occur in the State.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, gave the charge while reacting to the recent prediction made by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet on heat waves to be experienced in Nineteen states of the country.

Hajia Buge, in a statement made available to Radio Nigeria – Harmony FM in Ilorin, said Kwara State is one of the states in the country where the effect of climate change would be manifested.

She stressed the importance to alert the public and put in place necessary precautionary measures to keep the citizens safe.

The Commissioner advised residents to wear light and breathable cloths and also drink plenty of water to replace associated loss of body fluid.

Hajia Musa Buge also encouraged the opening of windows to allow adequate ventilation and reduce outdoor activities, especially during the sunny part of the day.

The Commissioner further enjoined residents to seek prompt medical attention in case they notice any strange feelings to forestall outbreak of meningitis or heat stroke as it is being experienced in some states.

Hajia Buge added that that the Ministry of Environment would collaborate with stakeholders to raise more awareness on heat waves.
