Speaking during the presentation in Ilorin, Founder of WSCIJ and Publisher of Premium Times, Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, described Justice Salami as a symbol of courage and judicial independence, whose legacy continues to inspire accountability and the rule of law in Nigeria.

According to Mr. Olorunyomi, the fundamental purpose of the Wole Soyinka Centre is to provide a “legal basis” for journalism in Nigeria.

He noted that the mission of the Centre is rooted in Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, which encourages the media to hold power accountable.

Responding, Justice Ayo Salami expressed profound gratitude to the WSCIJ for the prestigious Human Rights Defender Award.

The eminent jurist shared reflections on his personal career trajectory, notable legal precedents, and how the likes of Prof. Wole Soyinka and Chief Obafemi Awolowo inspired him to the path of courage and commitment.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the presentation, the Exercise Director of WSCIJ, Mrs. Motunrayo Alaka praised Justice Salami for his unwavering commitment to the rule of law and his courageous defense of human rights throughout his illustrious career, notably as the President of the Court of Appeal.

“We picked Justice Ayo Salami for his consistency as a legal practitioner, his work in the Court of Appeal as President, and his stand for justice, which the poor look forward to,” she stated.

She explained that the award is bestowed upon Nigerians who have walked the path of integrity, demonstrated a steadfast defense of human rights and remained unintimidated by the establishment in the pursuit of justice.

In strengthening the Investigative ecosystem, she noted that while the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Journalism primarily celebrates courageous journalists, the WSCIJ recognizes that their work is bolstered by individuals in other sectors who uphold similar values.

Mrs. Alaka added that, by honouring Justice Salami, the organization reinforces the Centre’s commitment to integrity, fairness, and credibility in society.

Justice Ayo Salami joins a distinguished group of legal minds and advocates such as Justice Kayode Eso the late Supreme Court of Justice, who was honoured with the award in 2011.

The ceremony was attended by wife of the recipient, Mrs. Olayinka Salami and other family members.
