The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kwara State Branch, has condemned the alleged assault, harassment, arrest, and detention of Professor Eyo Ekpe and other staff members of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the association, Professor Abdulrahman Afolabi, the NMA described the incident, which reportedly occurred within the hospital premises on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as disturbing, unacceptable, and a violation of the sanctity of healthcare institutions.
The association alleged that EFCC operatives invaded the hospital, physically assaulted medical personnel, intimidated healthcare workers, and disrupted activities within the facility.
The Kwara NMA expressed solidarity with the Akwa Ibom State branch of the association and the affected staff, stressing that hospitals are sacred centres dedicated to saving lives and should never become scenes of violence or intimidation.
The association called for the immediate release of all detained medical personnel, a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, and a public apology from the EFCC to the affected workers, the management of UUTH, and the medical profession.
It also urged relevant authorities to uphold professionalism, civility, and due process in all dealings involving healthcare institutions and workers across the country.
