The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks to enable more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of future elections.
The Commission announced that the exercise, which began on August 18, 2025 and was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now close on Sunday, July 26, 2026. INEC said the decision followed a review of the exercise and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
According to the Commission, the extension reflects its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the national Register of Voters before upcoming electoral activities.
INEC also unveiled a new online self-service voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters. The service will go live on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal, where applicants can access a step-by-step guide to complete the registration process.
The Commission said the self-service platform will allow first-time voters to initiate and complete their registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office. It added that the system is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and other integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the national voter register.
INEC urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new technology-driven option, reaffirming its commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process.
