The Community Need Care Development Initiative, (CONCED) has urged women members of political parties to become more active and visible in politics, to enhance their participation and representation in decision-making.
The call was made at an engagement organised by CONCED for women members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Speaking at the event, thw Chief Executive Officer of CONCED, Mrs Margret Erinle, said women need to speak up on issues affecting them, make themselves visible within the political space and actively seek elective and appointive positions.
Mrs Erinle encouraged the women to support one another and create opportunities for other women to grow, stressing that greater representation of women in politics would require collective effort and solidarity amongst women.
She also urged the participants to build their capacities, remain active in party activities and take advantage of opportunities to demonstrate their leadership abilities.
Also speaking, a Former Chairman of PDP in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Alhaji Dare Garuba advised women to be more supportive of one another and engage in party activities that could position them for leadership opportunities.
Alhaji Garuba also urged political parties to provide more appointments and opportunities for women.
The former chairman further encouraged the women to remain committed to the party and demonstrate their capacity through participation, to strengthen their chances of attaining leadership positions.
Responding, the participants expressed appreciation to CONCED for organising the engagement, describing it as an opportunity to encourage women to become more involved in politics.
They also committed themselves to greater participation in party activities and to supporting initiatives aimed at advancing women’s political representation in Ilorin South and beyond.
The training was supported by Global Affairs Canada as part of activities for its Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project.
