The leadership of Fulani community in Kwara State has raised concern over the increasing cases of cattle rustling, describing the trend as a major threat to the livelihood of pastoralists across the state.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, the leader of the Fulani community, Alhaji Adam Abdullah Ojonla, said many herders had lost large numbers of cattle to suspected bandits and kidnappers, noting that livestock remains their main source of income.
Alhaji Abdullah Ojonla commended the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, Forest Guards and local vigilantes for their efforts in recovering stolen cattle.
He also praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, for supporting the fight against banditry and kidnapping.
According to him, about 30 per cent of the stolen cattle have been recovered, while owners have been invited to identify their animals before they are returned.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the Aro of Sheriki Fulani, Mallam Ibrahim Dende, said many of the recovered cattle were traced to Kogi and Niger States.
He thanked the Kwara State Government, security agencies and the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Alhaji Femi Yusuf, for their support.
Mallam Dende called on the government to strengthen education in pastoral communities through the establishment of more nomadic schools, deployment of qualified teachers and proper monitoring of the programme.
He said improved education would promote peaceful coexistence, enhance livelihoods and help reduce insecurity.
