Four persons have been confirmed dead, while four others were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed at the Popo-Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, trapping eight people in the building, which comprises 26 rooms and is located near Masalasi Gogoro.
Kwara State Fire Service, in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service and other emergency agencies, carried out search-and-rescue operations to evacuate victims trapped beneath the rubble.
Four persons were rescued, while four others identified as Muhammed Bolakale, Fasilat, Mistura and Barakat were recovered and confirmed dead.
Two excavators were deployed to clear the debris, while personnel from the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, the Nigeria Police Force, Emergency Ambulance Services, KWARTMA and the Nigerian Red Cross participated in the rescue operation.
The Chief Fire Officer, Mr Alabi Muhammed, commended the responding agencies for their professionalism and urged residents to promptly report cracks and other signs of structural weakness in buildings.
He said the affected building had been assessed as unsafe for habitation and advised residents to avoid entering the premises.
