The University of Ilorin has formally honoured the memory of its ninth Vice-Chancellor, the late Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, during a solemn Special Senate Session held on the campus grounds.

The event brought together the academic community, government officials, and regional education leaders to celebrate the life and legacy of the distinguished professor, who passed away on June 6.

Current Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. AbdulWahab Egbewole, described the late scholar’s life as a blueprint for leadership.

“As a nation, one of our best is gone. But what we see are his candour, courage, fighting spirit, and record of achievement,” Prof. Egbewole told the Senate.

“As a University, we are sad, but we are celebrating a life of fulfilment and achievements. He was a leader whose life was marked by resilience and an unwavering commitment to the University’s progress.”

The University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, while providing insight into the human side of the late Vice-Chancellor’s governance, noted that Ambali viewed the University as a holistic ecosystem rather than merely an academic entity.

“We remember him as a leader who understood that a university is not just lecture halls and laboratories, but also character, community, and voice,” Akogun said.

He emphasised that the late Ambali was a champion of discipline who worked tirelessly to foster an environment conducive to institutional growth, mentored young academics, and prioritized the welfare of the university community.

The 7th Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem, on his part, delivered a moving eulogy that emphasised the personal integrity of the deceased.

“I regret his loss but rejoice that my brother lived a life worthy of emulation. He lived a Muslim life and his style wasn’t known for favouritism,”

Prof. AbdulRaheem noted that the late Vice-Chancellor maintained a standard of fairness that served as a moral compass throughout his tenure.

He further reminded those in attendance of the transient nature of life and the importance of leaving a lasting positive impact.

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, who also served as Vice Chancellor of the institution, described Ambali as a humble leader, respected scholar and administrator whose contributions continue to resonate within the institution.

Attendees also include the Consortium of Kwara Universities (KU8+): Led by Prof. Jelili Olasunkanmi, representing a united front of regional academic excellence, Kwara State University, represented by Prof. Isiaka Aliagan.

Numerous former Deputy Vice-Chancellors and administrative heads who worked closely with Prof. Ambali during his time in office were also in attendance.

Representing the Kwara State Government, Prof. Gali Alaya delivered a message on behalf of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, extending the government’s deepest condolences to the university community and the family, offering collective prayers for the peaceful repose of the former Vice-Chancellor’s soul.
