The University of Ilorin has established two centres: Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy and the Centre for Gender Studies.

According to a statement by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the decision was made during the 301st meeting of the University Senate, held at the University Auditorium.

It explains that the Senate unanimously approved the establishment of the centers following separate presentations by the Chairman of the Business Committee of the Senate (BCOS), Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho.

The Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy aims to promote the sustainable use of oceans and freshwater resources while minimizing environmental degradation which aligns with the global agenda for sustainable development.

The University’s Senate and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, emphasized the importance of the blue economy and the University’s role in driving it.

The Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy will have a Board headed by a Chairperson appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, and a management team led by a Director assisted by deputy directors.

The Centre for Gender Studies aims to provide a platform to critically examine and challenge traditional gender norms, roles, and stereotypes that perpetuate inequalities. It will promote gender-sensitive curricula and inclusive teaching practices.

The Gender Studies programmes, according to the statement, are essential for advancing the global agenda for gender equality, equipping students with knowledge and tools to advocate for women’s rights, challenge gender-based discrimination, and promote social justice.

The Centre for Gender Studies will amplify the experiences, perspectives, and contributions of women and girls, making their voices and stories visible, and empowering underrepresented groups, while challenging male-centric biases in traditional academic disciplines.
