Aso-Oke Weavers Wants Kwara State To Establish Thread Making Factories To Boost Economy
Aso-oke, is a traditional attire, mostly worn by the Yoruba people to showcase the richness of their culture.
However, the trend in today’s fashion world, has shown that Aso-oke is no longer only a ceremonial wear but also a die hard fashion statement.
Traditionally, aso-oke, a popular Yoruba attire, is sown as iro and buba by women, while men make agbada or daisiki and sokoto with it.
It is mostly worn during wedding ceremonies, coronation, and chieftaincy events.

However, trends in the fashion industry has shown that aso-oke could be made into other desirable styles as well combined with other fabrics and ornaments.
This ancient fabric, known for its rich history and intricate weaving techniques, has also found its way into markets in Europe and North America.
Radio Nigeria – Harmony FM speaks with people in the business of weaving aso-oke on developments in the business and the challenges they face.

According to the Vice Chairman, Isale-Aluko zone of Aso-oke Weavers Association, Mr Kamaldeen Onilu and a weaver, Mr Kola Alasoke, the business was inherited from their parents.
Mr Onilu and Mr Alasoke pointed out that the use of lighter threads for weaving and creativity of fashion designers have changed the texture and look of aso-oke.
Aso-oke is typically handwoven, a process that could take up to three weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the pattern being created.
This labour-intensive process is what makes Aso-Oke truly unique and valuable.
Although, the weavers said some people have left the trade for the city, while some others have gone into transportation business such as Okada riding.
Aso-oke has been found to be an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics as it is made from natural materials and involves minimal industrial waste.

Mr Onilu explained that the trade is attracting new entrants and is creating job opportunities.
However, he noted that the start up capital for the trade has increased due to economy hardship.
Mr Onilu appealed to the State Government to establish thread making factories to reduce cost of production.
He pointed out that with proper support and investment, Aso-Oke could become a significant contributor to Kwara State’s economy and a symbol of the State’s rich cultural heritage.
