Centre Partners Nigerian Journalists to Curb Proliferation of Small Arms

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has partnered the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit firearms and light weapons.

During an advocacy visit the Kwara State Council of the NUJ, in Ilorin, the Centre’s North Central Zonal Coordinator, Retired Major General Hamzat Bature, emphasized the critical role of the media in educating the public about the risks associated with illegal arms.

Major General Hazmat Bature urged journalists to expose individuals involved in illegal arms production and report them to the authorities.

The NCCSALW is tasked with preventing, controlling, and retrieving illicit firearms, particularly those in the possession of unauthorized individuals.

Bature expressed concern over the rising involvement of blacksmiths in the illegal fabrication of locally made firearms.

In response, the Chairman of the Kwara State Council of the NUJ, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, commended the federal government for establishing the Centre.

He pledged the union’s commitment to intensifying awareness campaigns on the dangers of illegal firearms.

The partnership aims to educate Nigerians about the devastating impact of small arms proliferation on national security, public safety, and economic stability.

The NUJ Chairman also called on security agencies to work closely with journalists and other stakeholders to ensure that illicit arms are removed from circulation and perpetrators are brought to justice.
