The Kwara State Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology has been urged to commence immediate identification of all unregistered cooperative Societies in the State.
The charge followed resolutions made by the State House of Assembly on its motion on the need to curb the Illegal activities of unregistered cooperative societies sponsored by a member representing Irepodun Constituency, Mr. Odetundun Olushola during Tuesday’s plenary.
Speaking on the Motion, Mr. Olushola noted that there were growing number of cooperative societies in the State and there is need to establish legal frameworks for them.
Also, in his contribution, the Co-sponsored of the motion and a member representing Ipaye/Malete/Oloru Constituency, Mr. Ayanshola Saliu emphasized the need for government and other stakeholders to sensitize the public on the importance of patronizing registered Cooperative Societies.
Other lawmakers who contributed to the motion urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq to direct the Ministry of Communication and radio stations to promote only genuine financial institutions and cooperative societies to the public.
While reading the resolutions of the House, the Speaker, Engineer, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu called on the State government to direct the Ministry to review the registration process for cooperative societies to make it more transparency, efficiency and accountability.
In another development, the House had taken a significant step towards improving electricity supply in the state by reading the Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill for the first time.
The Bill when passed to law will support economic development and protect independent electricity generation, transmission and distribution network schemes in the State.
