Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has inaugurated a steering committee to oversee the transfer of the Kampe Games Reserve to the Federal Government as a National Park.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, officially handed over the Kampe Games Reserve to the Federal Government as a National Park.
Governor Abdulrazaq emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it stems from the desire to offer Kwara State greater opportunities for growth and position it on the global map for biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
While acknowledging that preserving and enhancing the reserve is a responsibility that benefits future generations, he congratulated the committee members and urged them to actively participate in the conservation process, contributing to a sustainable future for all Nigerians.
Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal commended the Governor’s swift response to the Federal Government’s call, praising his commitment to protecting the planet and his role in the sustainable development of the nation.
Chairperson of the Committee and Commissioner for Environment Mrs Nafisat Musa Buge highlighted the opportunities presented by the development, including environmental restoration, biodiversity regeneration, and an additional tourist site in the state.
Emir of Patigi,Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II thanked the Governor for taking a bold step and pledged the support of the Emirate for the Federal Government towards the realization of the project.
The steering committee, which comprises of cabinet members, traditional leaders, and senior citizens, will guide the transition process and leverage their experience to ensure a successful handover.
The Kampe Games Reserve is named after the Kampe River and considered one of Kwara State’s natural treasures.
