Kwara State Government has been urged to direct the Ministry of Justice to ensure full implementation of the state’s Street Begging Prohibition Law to curb incidents of insecurity and other negative factors that are associated with it.

This was resolution by the State House of Assembly on a motion on the need to control the trend of street begging in the state and mitigate it security risk.

The motion was sponsored by a member representing Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituency, Mr. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba during the assembly’s plenary.

While reading the resolutions of the House, the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu implored the office of the Secretary to the State Government to set up a committee to assess the scope, causes and security implications of street begging and come up with measures that would help in mitigating the menace in the society.

Leading debate on the motion, Alhaji Danbaba said the growing trend of street begging is not only undermining public order but also exposes vulnerable individuals to abuse, trafficking and exploration on the safety and well-being of residents.

Other lawmakers in their contributions urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to direct the State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development to set up Community-Based Task Force would identify, report and support the reintegration of beggers into the society.

Meanwhile, the House had earlier read for the first time a Bill to amend secret cults and secret societies prohibition Acts in the State.

The Bill, when passed will impose stiffer penalty to offenders and other related matters.
