Nigerian journalists have been urged to uphold ethical standards by thoroughly verifying their reports before publishing to avoid inciting unrest in the country.

The first Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate, Dr AbdulKadir Solagberu gave the advice during the 2024 Pres Week of the Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, held in llorin, Kwara State Capital.

Dr Solagberu, who acknowledged the crucial role played by journalists in maintaining peace and stability, emphasized the importance of ethical journalism.

The first Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate however commended journalists for their contributions to the national development and enjoined them to always prioritize their safety and well-being in the line of duty.

Dr AbdulKadir Solagberu, who was the Chairman of the occasion, also reiterated the need to promote absolute Freedom of the Press in the country.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Senoir Special Adviser and Counselor, Alhaji Saadu Salahudeen reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting and ensuring the safety of journalists in the state.

Governor AbdulRazaq noted that the contributions of journalists to the development of the State and Nigeria at large remain invaluable.

Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondent Chapel of the NUJ, Mallan AbdulHakeem Garba appealed to publisher and media owners to prioritize the insurance for their members.

He also urged the National Assembly to enact law making it crime to attach journalists while discharging their duties.

The 2024 Press Week highlight the challenges faced by media professionals.
