Nigerian dance icon, Kafayat Shafau, popularly known as Kaffy, has advised parents and guardians to encourage and support their children who show interest in taking up dance as a profession.

She gave the advice in Ilorin during the 10th Annual International Conference of the Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON), held at Ojaja University, Ilorin.

Kaffy, who was a guest speaker at the event, emphasized that dance is not just an art form but also a viable career path that can contribute significantly to the nation’s creative economy.

She noted that with proper guidance and professional training, talented youths can achieve success and gain global recognition through dance.

According to her, “Parents need to understand that dance has evolved beyond mere entertainment–it is now a multi-billion-naira industry that offers opportunities in performance, education, therapy, and cultural preservation.”

The celebrated choreographer and fitness expert further encouraged educational institutions to integrate dance and other performing arts into their curricula in order to nurture young talents from an early stage.

The four-day conference, themed “The Concept of Detty December and the Emerging Trends in the Practice of Dance in Contemporary Nigeria/Africa,” brought together scholars, practitioners, and stakeholders in the creative industry.
