Kwara First Lady Calls For Increased Participation Of Women In Politics For Community Development

Women across the country have been charged to harness their inner strength, talent, intelligent and skills to participate actively in politics and community development.

Kwara State First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake Abdulrazak made the call at the Improving Electoral Integrity and Accountability, IEIA Project Close – Out ceremony in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital.

Ambassador Olufolake who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs.Afolashade Opeyemi, said active participation of women at all levels of decision-making and politics is essential to the achievement of equality, sustainable development, peace, and democracy.

She commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak for giving women more than 35 percent representation in government.

The First Lady praised Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, and MacArthur Foundation for championing and supporting women course.

In an address of welcome, the Executive Director, International Women Communication Centre, IWCC, Ilorin, Hajia Limota Goroso Giwa explained that the programme which run for Eight years has helped to build the capacity of grassroot women to be part of accountability crusader to fight corruption, and sensitize women on active political participation.

Hajia Goroso – Giwa who said the effort has been yielding positive results with emergence of Five female lawmakers, commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak unprecedented record of women inclusion in government.

On her part, the Deputy Director, MacArthur Foundation, Dr. Amina Salihu expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the 8 year program which has impacted the society positively.

Earlier, the Secretary General, Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, Hajia Saudatu Mahdi who went down memory lane on IEIA project said the programme has
enhanced access to justice, and redress for violations of women’s rights, as well as women empowerment.

Highlights of the event was presentation of Award to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Prince Mahe Abdulkadir, and to the First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake Abdulrazak and talent display from winners of Talent hunt competition in the State.
