Kwara State Police Command has confirmed a deadly bandit attack on Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area, which occurred on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Command said armed assailants stormed the community and opened sporadic gunfire, resulting in the loss of several lives.
The attackers also set houses and shops ablaze, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
Preliminary findings revealed that the attackers, suspected to be religious extremists, carried out the assault with coordinated brutality, traumatising residents and destroying property.
The bodies of the victims have since been recovered and accorded a mass burial in line with local customs.
In a swift response, the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq, on Wednesday led a high-powered delegation to Woro Community for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
The Governor was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Adekimi Ojo, psc, mnips; the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Michael Oganwu, fsi; the Brigade Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier-General N. N. Rume; alongside other senior security officers and top government officials.
During the visit, the delegation commiserated with the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar, and families affected by the tragic incident.
They assured residents of decisive measures to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
Meanwhile, a Joint Security Task Force comprising personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the National Forest Guards has been deployed to the area.
The team is currently on ground to maintain law and order, prevent further security breaches, and reassure residents of their safety.
The Police Command further confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been launched to track down the perpetrators, with assurances that all those involved will be brought to justice and made to face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Woro Community during this period of mourning, while praying for the repose of the souls of the departed.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, cooperate fully with security agencies, and promptly provide credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
The Command assured the public that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
