The Kwara State Police Command has successfully contained a series of violent disturbances that broke out over the weekend in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

According to an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the unrest.

The incidents began on Saturday, May 25, at approximately 4:00 p.m., when operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS), acting on credible intelligence, apprehended a known drug dealer and suspected arms trafficker, identified as Azeez, popularly known as “A-Z.”

However, while en route to the station with the suspect, the police officers were ambushed by a group of irate youths who forcibly freed Azeez from custody.

The operatives withdrew tactically and returned to base for a strategic reassessment.

Shortly after, around 4:30 p.m., the same group attempted to invade the Omu-Aran Police Station but were swiftly repelled by law enforcement officers.

The mob later regrouped and stormed the Olomu’s Palace, setting ablaze a motorcycle belonging to the Kabiyesi’s police orderly.

Tensions escalated further on Sunday, May 26, when another faction of the mob attacked the Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank at about 2:00 p.m. Armed with stones and other weapons, the attackers vandalized the bank’s CCTV camera, signboard, and damaged three vehicles within the premises.

Police reinforcements arrived at the scene, causing the assailants to flee, however, no staff was harmed, they were all safely escorted to the station.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, psc, mnips, has directed increased patrols and surveillance across the affected areas to prevent further violence.

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, warning against the spread of misinformation.

The Kwara State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace, enforcing the law, and safeguarding lives and property.
