No fewer than ninety persons with disabilities in Kwara State, have been presented with mobility and hearing aids by the State Government.

The annual event which was organised by the State Ministry of Social Development, is part of activities marking this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

At the ceremony in Ilorin, the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq said that his administration prioritizes wellbeing of persons with disabilities hence the appointment of three of their members into key positions in the State.

Governor Abdulrazaq, represented by the Chief of Staff to the State Government, Abdulkadiri Mahe, said that he would continue to empower persons with disabilities with life skills to enable them have a decent means of livelihood.

“We are aware that mobility aids constitute an important ingredient necessary for that pursuance of viable economic venture by any individual especially persons living with disabilities. It is for this reason that we have gathered here today to distribute walking aids worth millions of naira to people living with disabilities.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Social Development, Opeyemi Afolashade appealed to individuals and corporate organizations to complement Government’s efforts in assisting persons with disabilities.

“The event is to serve as a wake up call to the generality of the people on the need to show and recognize people living with disabilities as important members of the society.”

The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the State Governor for the kind gesture.

The youth leader, Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, Mr Hakeem Lawal, appealed to State Government to sustain the initiative.

“We want to appreciate this Government, for their inclusivity for carrying along persons with disabilities in virtually all their programmes. We beseech God almighty not to ever cease his bounties on them.”

Items distributed include wheel chairs, crutches hearing aids, tricycles, guide canes, and walking sticks.

Highpoint of the event was the demonstration of car driving skills by Segun Bamidele, a physically disabled man, who has a talent in converting tricycles and motorcycles into small cars with three wheels.
