
Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority, KWARTMA, has tasked building contractors in the state to desist from depositing sands, granites, planks and other forms of construction materials on roads and highways.
The acting Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Engineer Bamidele Michael made the call in a statement made available to newsmen in Ilorin.
Engineer Bamidele expressed displeasure at the manners in which building contractors were misusing the roads, which in turn reduce the road capacity, obstructing and causing accident to other unsuspected road users as well as demeaning the beauty values of the roads.
He remarked that the authority would not hesitate to sanction anyone caught with the acts according to the traffic regulations of the agency’s law which mandates it to safeguard the the roads and highways from encroachment.
Meanwhile, the statement adds that the authority will hold meeting with Kwara State Association of Tipper owners and other relevant stakeholders on the need to discourage road encroachment for easy passage of vehicles.
While enjoinning the building contractors to observe standard setback during construction work, Bamidele tasks shop owners to refrain from displaying their wares on the roads, kerbs and walkways.
The KWARTMA boss however charged all stakeholders in transportation sector to cooperate with agency in achieving a hitch-free movement for all.
