The Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Engr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, has emphasized the need for tertiary institutions across the country to embrace agriculture as a vital tool for national development and food security.

Engr Abdul Jimoh made the call during the harvest of maize at the institution’s farm, where he commended the management, staff, and students involved in the agricultural project for their dedication and commitment.

Represented by the Deputy Rector (Academic), Dr. (Mrs.) Felicia Olabisi Awolola, the Rector noted that agriculture remains a practical avenue for students to acquire hands-on experience and entrepreneurial skills, which are essential for self-reliance and national growth.

He urged other higher institutions to integrate agricultural activities into their academic programmes, stressing that beyond theoretical learning, students should be exposed to productive ventures that can boost the economy and reduce unemployment.

Engr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed commended the Kwara State Government for granting the institution the autonomy to operate efficiently.

He reaffirmed the Polytechnic’s commitment to sustaining and expanding its agricultural initiatives as part of efforts to promote food security and innovation in the sector.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Commercial Farm Committee, Engr. (Mrs.) Ruth Bayeri, explained that the initiative would not only benefit surrounding communities but also serve as a practical learning platform for students to gain exposure to modern agricultural practices.

Engr. Bayeri reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting agriculture as both an academic pursuit and an economic venture capable of empowering youths and fostering community development.
