Media professionals have called for urgent actions against climate change, ritual killing of female folk and other social issues facing women in Nigeria.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of a one-day training organized by the International Women Communication Centre (IWCC) for media personnel in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The training, at the instance of Hajia Nimota Goroso-Giwa, which brought together media practitioners from across the state, focused on advocacy and reporting on critical issues such as deforestation, gender-based violence, and women’s empowerment.

Participants at the training called on the government to implement policies that discourage deforestation and promote sustainable environmental practices.

They also advocated for the provision of accessible and affordable clean energy, as well as the reintroduction of local sanitary inspectors to improve public health.

On the issue of gender-based violence, the participants called for the immediate criminalization of ritual killings and the introduction of guidance and counseling in school curricula to educate young people on the impact and implications of violence.

The communique also emphasized the need for increased women’s participation in politics and decision-making, as well as improved economic empowerment for women.

The training also reviewed the achievements of the Beijing Conference, which marked its 30th anniversary, and noted significant progress in areas such as girl-child education and women’s economic empowerment.

However, participants expressed concern over the persistence gender-based violence, unemployment, and poverty among women.

The IWCC called on the UN and other global bodies to invest more in women’s economic empowerment and support efforts to increase women’s participation in politics and decision-making.
