The Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Comrade Issa Aremu, has emphasized the importance of maintaining industrial harmony between employers and employees to boost productivity and promote workplace peace.

Comrade Aremu made the call during a one-day Education Workshop for workers in the North Central geopolitical zone with the theme, “Understanding the Employee Compensation Act 2010: Responsibilities and Benefits.”

Represented by the Head of the Department of Trade Union Education at the Institute, Dr. Michael Raji, the Director General stressed that both employers and employees owe mutual responsibilities that ensure smooth operations and sustainable development.

He noted that proper understanding and implementation of the Employee Compensation Act would help safeguard workers’ rights and minimize industrial disputes.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, represented by the Head of Compliance, Mr. Abdul-Lateef Musa, urged workers to enroll in the compensation scheme to access its numerous benefits.

He explained that the Trust Fund provides financial and medical support to employees who suffer occupational diseases or injuries in the line of duty, adding that affected workers are entitled to compensation and rehabilitation as provided by law.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Mrs. Ruth Ejechi, said that the programme aligns with the Institute’s mandate of educating and sensitizing workers about their rights and privileges under the Employee Compensation Act.

She expressed concern that many workers remain unaware of the Act’s benefits, underscoring the need for sustained awareness efforts.

The sensitization workshop, jointly organized by the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies and the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, attracted participants from various ministries, departments, agencies, and paramilitary organizations across the North Central region.

The event also provided participants with the opportunity to engage experts, ask questions, and gain practical insights into the effective implementation of the Employee Compensation Act 2010.
