Construction of gully erosion sites within communities in Nasarawa State is to commence soon courtesy the Nigeria Climate Adaptation Erosion and Watershed Management Project – European Investment Bank Assisted NEWMAP -EIB.
Eight gully erosion sites have been designated for the first phase of the intervention in
Five local government areas of Karu , Keffi, Akwanga, Keana and Lafia the state capital which has the largest chunk of the intervention due to the magnitude of the erosion.
Leading a team on an assessment tour of the affected areas within Lafia and Keana ahead of start of work, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Princess Margaret Elayo reaffirmed government’s commitment to alleviating the plight of the masses in every possible way.
She explained that the tour was for her to assess sites already mapped out by the state NEWMAP -EIB team for intervention before the launch of the project..
Princess Margaret expressed satisfaction with the identified erosion sites and appealed to residents to be patient as government embark on projects that have direct impact on their lives.
The project Coordinator NEWMAP-EIB Nasarawa state. Dr Mohammad Ismail noted that the intervention would be in phases with the first phase expected to kick start soon.
According to Doctor Ismail ,many gully erosion sites have been identified in the three senatorial zones of the state but work will start on the most critical sites within communities.
He stressed that the project when executed would go a long way in mitigating the impact of climate change ,environmental degradation and flooding in the affected areas.
Dr Ismail expressed readiness and commitment of the team to execute the assignment diligently and commended Governor Abdullahi Sule and the state Commissioner for Environment Margaret Elayo for their support towards ensuring that the project takes off smoothly and executed accordingly.
Gully erosion sites visited by the team include Cassava processing mill at Angwan Nungu,Sandaji street by ‘B’ Division police station, Gidigidi community and Angwan Sandaji behind Police CID office along Makurdi road all in Lafia as well as two sites within Keana town.
