National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed its unshaken confidence in the Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed’s leadership of the Kwara State Council of the union, dismissing reports that suggested otherwise as misleading and unfounded.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the National Secretary of the Union, Achike Chude, the Secretariat clarified that its administrative letter dated July 25, 2025, was never a vote of no confidence but rather a peace initiative aimed at fostering reconciliation and healing internal rifts within the council.

“At no point in that letter was it stated, implied, insinuated, or suggested that the National Secretariat had lost confidence in the Kwara State Council leadership. On the contrary, the council under ‘Lanre Ahmed retains the full confidence of the national leadership,” the statement read.

The National Secretary of the union expressed deep concern over the misinterpretation of the letter, which he said was unfortunately used by some media platforms to attack the council, fuel acrimony, and worsen internal disputes.

“It is regrettable that a well-intentioned move has been twisted and weaponized, leading to toxic engagements and personal attacks, especially on social media. This trend is not only unhealthy but also damages the very foundation of the union,” Chude lamented.

He decried the growing culture of public insults and internal bickering among members, warning that such actions not only weaken the credibility of the union but also betray its values.

“Criticism is welcome when constructive, but abuse especially of both past and present leaders is completely unacceptable. It runs contrary to the very ideals of journalism and the NUJ,” he noted.

The National Secretary emphasized the importance of unity among the three critical pillars of the NUJ structure, the National Secretariat, State Councils, and Chapels, reiterating that all three must function harmoniously for the health and progress of the Union.

On recent developments, Chude expressed satisfaction that efforts toward reconciliation were beginning to yield results, citing the full attendance at the last congress, reintegration of previously removed members into the council’s WhatsApp platform, and improved communication as positive steps.

“These are encouraging signs, and we urge the other side to reciprocate with maturity, decorum, and constructive engagement. I am also pledging to serve as a guarantor for re-admitted members to ensure rules of engagement are upheld”, he said.

He, however, clarified that the Secretariat never received any formal request or communication regarding the suspension of any member, including Dare Akogun, as some had alleged.

Chude called on all stakeholders in the Kwara NUJ council to “sheath their swords” and embrace compromise in the collective interest of the union.

“There is no settlement of conflicts that is 100% satisfactory to all sides. But in every sincere reconciliation, everyone gains something. The goal is unity, peace, and a stronger union.”

He assured that the National Secretariat remains committed to protecting the rights of all members and supporting efforts to rebuild trust and cohesion in the Kwara Council.
