Islamic scholar and University of Ilorin lecturer, Professor Abubakr Imam Ali-Agan has cautioned Muslim faithful against engaging in practices that contradict the teachings of Islam, especially the growing trend of copying traditions associated with other religions.

Professor Ali-Agan, who gave the admonition during his weekly Islamic programme Madrasat Muhammad on Radio Nigeria – Harmony FM, Idofian, Kwara State, noted that such habits weaken the spiritual identity of Muslims and erode the values the religion upholds.

The respected scholar expressed concern over the increasing number of Muslims who participate in Christmas celebrations and similar activities through wearing of clothes and other symbols.

He stressed that while Islam encourages peaceful coexistence, it does not permit believers to imitate religious rituals or festivities that are not part of the Islamic faith.

Professor Ali-Agan explained that Islamic teachings are complete and comprehensive, providing guidance for every aspect of life.

According to him, Muslims must anchor their actions on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), rather than following trends that conflict with their beliefs.

The scholar urged parents and guardians to educate their children on the true essence of Islamic identity.

He warned that the influence of social media and societal pressures can easily mislead young Muslims into accepting practices that hold no place in Islam.

Strengthening the home with proper religious knowledge, he said, is key to preventing such drift.

Professor Abubakr Imam Ali-Agan also called on Islamic organisations, Imams and community leaders to intensify enlightenment programmes that will reinforce the values and responsibilities expected of Muslims.

He emphasised the need for continuous public sensitisation, especially during festive periods where wrong practices tend to become widespread.

He advised Muslims to cultivate pride in their faith and uphold the dignity of Islam in their daily affairs.

According to him, standing firm on Islamic principles is not only an obligation but also a pathway to earning Allah’s pleasure and maintaining societal harmony.

Professor Ali-Agan reaffirmed that peaceful coexistence remains a core teaching of Islam, but it must not be misunderstood as justification for adopting non-Islamic religious practices.

He urged Muslims to remain steadfast, conscious of their religious obligations, and committed to preserving the uniqueness of their faith at all times.
