The Standard Bearers Islamic Organisation (SB), a faith-based non-profit organisation, has thrown its weight behind NAFDAC’s decision to enforce the ban on sachet-packaged alcoholic drinks.
In a statement jointly signed by the organisation’s National Coordinator, Dr Nurudeen Toyin Abdulraheem, and National Secretary, Mr Qassim Adegbuyi, the group described the move as a necessary public health intervention, noting that cheap, small-volume alcohol has made harmful drinking easy and common among young people and minors.
According to global health data, alcohol causes over 3 million deaths annually and is a major driver of road accidents, violence, liver disease, and mental health disorders.
In Nigeria, sachet alcohol often sold for as little as ₦100, has worsened binge drinking, youth addiction, and community insecurity. While acknowledging concerns from industry players, SB stressed that public health and the protection of young lives must come first.
The organisation noted that Islamic ethical values, like many shared societal values, emphasise the protection of life, intellect, and family stability.SB urged NAFDAC and the Federal Government to remain firm while supporting affected businesses with transition plans.
