
Kwara State Government has commenced training programme on foundational literacy skills for 1,325 teachers selected from public basic schools across the state.
The training, which was organised in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the New Globe Educational Services, will focuses on themes: “Foundational Literacy Skills” and “Springs and Stride”.
Speaking at the ceremony in Ilorin, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Professor Shehu Adaramaja, said the training was organised to enhance the capacity of teachers.
Professor Adaramaja said that the foundational literacy training was aimed at ensuring and sustaining yearly increase in the average literacy skills of early grade pupils in government schools.
He explained that the Spring and Stride training, on the other hand, would focus on promoting productivity in software development, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The SUBEB Chairman noted that 500 teachers were selected from Primary one and Primary two classes respectively, 250 teachers from the Early Child Care Development Education (ECCDE) and 75 class teachers from the Pre-Basic level.
He stressed that teachers from Ilorin West and East Local Governments will have their training at Bishop Smith School, while those from Asa, Moro and Ifelodun Local Government Areas will converge at the LGEA School, Idofian among others.
The Chairman urged the participating teachers to conduct themselves responsibly and arrive early at their training centres to maximize the benefits of the sessions.
In a remark, Deputy Director, UBEC, Mrs Patient Abasi, commended the State Government’s effort towards revamping the education sector.
Speaking on behalf of the New Globe Educational Services, Mrs. Olaide Abel, stated that the present administration is known for positioning the state at the forefront of educational development.
