United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF has handed over 4,000 cartons of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food, RUTF, through Child Nutrition Fund to Kwara State Government.

The UNICEF Country Representative, Mrs Cristian Munduate handedover the four thousand cartons of the Therapeutic Food to the State at the Kwara State Banquet Hall, Ilorin.

Mrs Munduate explained that UNICEF is committed to partnering Kwara State Government in combating malnutrition in children during the critical first one thousand days of life.

The current management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in Kwara State is limited to a few health facilities and needs to be expanded to more facilities.

The country representative of UNICEF noted that the Child Nutrition Fund is to boost investments in nutrition policies and programmes as the initiative is lifesaving for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition and wasting.

Mrs Munduate called for continued investment in nutrition commodities for women and children.

The Kwara State Governor and Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq who was represented by the SSG, Prof. Shaaba Manma Jibril, explained that the State partnership with UNICEF was to uphold the fundamental rights of women and children.

The Governor gave the assurance that his administration would continue to make major advances towards improving child health and nutrition.

There were goodwill messages by the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Commissioner for Health, representative of Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, representatives of civil society organisations among others.
