The University of Ilorin has emphasized the need for students, particularly those in institutions of higher learning, to harness the positive potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This call was made by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, during an orientation programme for newly admitted postgraduate students held at the university campus.

Professor Egbewole, while emphasizing the imperative need for AI adoption, especially in research and innovation, stated that the institution has upgraded its ICT infrastructure to detect plagiarism in students’ academic submissions, including term papers, projects, theses, and dissertations.

The Vice Chancellor also reiterated the university’s commitment to upholding academic integrity, warning that any student found violating the institution’s rules and regulations would face consequences as the university’s values are rooted in hard work and integrity.

Regarding tuition fees, Prof. Egbewole stated that the University of Ilorin maintains a fair pricing system compared to other institutions, adding however, that due to the current economic situation in the country, students have been offered an opportunity of 60% payment.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Bamidele Owoyele, advised the new postgraduate students to remain focused, dedicated, and diligent while adhering to the institution’s rules and regulations.

He noted a 100% increase in postgraduate admissions for Master’s and PhD programmes and reaffirmed the management’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment.

On his part, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Alex Akanmu, charged the postgraduate students to conduct themselves honorably and assume mentorship roles for undergraduate students.

Dr. Akanmu, who is also the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Unilorin Chapter, assured that the institution would maintain a student- and lecturer-friendly academic environment for timely completion of academic programmes.

He also encouraged them to participate actively in workshops and networking opportunities.
