Wife of the Kwara State Governor, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq has appealed to corporate organisations and individuals to show compassion to cancer patients.
Ambassador Abdulrazaq made the appeal at an event to commemorate this year’s World Cancer Day in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
She emphasized that being affected by cancer is both emotionally and psychologically tasking, hence the need to provide a comprehensive care which cater for mental and emotional wellbeing of patients a d families.
“The theme of the 2025 World Cancer Day ‘United by Unique’ emphasizes a people-centered approach to cancer care, placing individuals and their stories at the heart of the conversation. It acknowledges that while cancer affects millions globally, each person’s experience is unique, and personalized care is essential.
“This year’s campaign no doubt speaks to the need for a fundamental shift in cancer care and health systems towards a people-centered approach, by placing individuals and communities at the center of decisions, health systems become more effective and cancer care more compassionate, leading to higher survival rates, and improved quality of life.”

She commended the State Commissioner for Health Dr Amina El-Imam for the various innovative strategies which had improved health services and wellbeing of the people.
Ambassador Olufolake restated her resolve to continue to champion advocacy and sensitization of the people about adoption of healthy lifestyle.
“While cancer stories differ, they are emotionally and psychologically tasking hence we must strive to provide comprehensive care that encompasses not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being of patients and families alike.
“On our part, my office and the Ajike People Support Center remains will not relent in leading advocacy and creating awareness and public sensitization to ensure that our people stay informed and embrace healthy lifestyles.”
Earlier, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam said that the 2020 data on cancer showed that Nigeria recorded 125,000 new cases of cancer and that breast and prostate cancers were prevalent.
Dr El-Imam stressed the need for regular self examination for breast cancer and monthly check up for prostate, colon and cervical cancer for early detection and care.
“…early detection of breast cancer can result in over 90% 5-year survival rates compared to about 30% for late-stage detection. I want to make a controversial request that for Valentine’s Day, or your loved one’s birthday, take them for a comprehensive cancer screening test. You just may be saving their lives.”
She applauded Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for his dedication to healthcare services and strengthening of health institutions to promote wellbeing of residents.
“I would like to use this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, and Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON, for the overwhelming support and investment in the health sector. Our Governor graciously approved free breast and cervical cancer screenings across the 16 LGAs for nearly 2,000 people. Many beneficiaries had their first cancer screens in this activity. All suspicious and positive cases were treated and linked to care. In addition, His Excellency has partnered with ASR Africa for the construction of the multibillion naira Abdul Samad Rabiu Cancer Centre to strengthen cancer management in the State.”
She also commended the various non governmental organizations, religious, traditional and community leaders for their support of the various government’s health interventions as well as initiatives.

In a remark, two time cancer survival, Jibike Gaya called for sensitization of the people to stop stigmatization of cancer patients and encourage people to speak out.
Mrs Gaya who pointed out that cancer treatment is capital intensive, appealed to Government to subsidize treatment and establish cancer treatment center in communities for easy access.
There were goodwill messages from development partners and NGOs, including the World Health Organization and Ajike People’s Support.
There were also dance performances and drama on cancer awareness.
