The Federal Government has been urged to ensure strict enforcement, monitoring and evaluation of its education policies across States.

An educator and doctoral research student in the United States, Hajia Mujibat Akorede, gave the charge in a reaction to the recent government’s ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils and students below Primary 6; Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary 3; and acceptance of reusable textbooks.

Hajia Akorede affirmed that the the policy addresses a key problem in the education sector as commercialisation of school through frequent graduation and false textbook purchases reduces attention on learning outcomes.

She pointed out that the policy would reduce unnecessary financial pressure on parents and help school focus more on learning.

The Educator charged the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, school inspectors and parents associations to ensure strict adherence.

Hajia Akorede however stressed the need to come up with alternative ways of celebrating children learning milestones to encourage them.

Hajia Akorede pointed out that the reform aligns with international best practices but maintained that the policy should take into account when new editions of textbooks should be repurchased as the goal is to give children holistic education.
