The Kwara State Police Command has recovered two AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 42 rounds of live ammunition from a commercial vehicle along the Alapa–Okolowo axis of Ilorin, leading to the discovery of a suspected gun-running network.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement, saying the weapons were intercepted during a stop-and-search operation by police operatives.
According to her, a bag containing the firearms and ammunition was found inside the vehicle, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect identified as Umaru M.
SP Ejire-Adeyemi said the suspect initially denied ownership of the bag but later admitted during interrogation that he was conveying the weapons.
She said Umaru’s statement provided investigators with a major breakthrough, as he allegedly linked the recovered firearms to another suspected member of the network identified as Dan Yarubawa.
The Police spokesperson explained that Yarubawa allegedly handed the weapons to Umaru for onward delivery to another individual, identified as Dahiru, outside Kwara State.
The Command said efforts had been intensified to arrest the other suspects and unravel the full extent of the suspected gun-running network.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, reassured residents that the Command would sustain proactive and intelligence-led operations to protect lives and property across the state.
He urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to the police to assist ongoing investigations and prevent criminal activities.
