A woman mistaken for a kidnapper was reported killed by an irate mob at the popular Ipata market in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State .

The incident occurred when the woman, who was later discovered to be a destitute, was seen wandering around in the market.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, described it as unfortunate.

‎”Information received that a woman, suspected to be destitute, was sighted wandering around the community; misinformed members of the public wrongly suspected her to be a kidnapper. In the ensuing circumstances, an irate mob descended on the woman, inflicting serious bodily harm”

She explained that upon swift mobilization, Police patrol teams rushed to the scene, and took the victim to the General Hospital, Ilorin, for urgent medical attention but regrettably, the attending doctor confirmed her dead as a result of injuries sustained.

The Police spokesperson said the remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary, while discreet investigation has commenced.

The police command strongly condemns the act of jungle justice, which not only undermines the rule of law but also poses grave danger to innocent lives.

She stressed that security challenges cannot be resolved through mob action, warning that such acts only worsen insecurity and endanger innocent lives.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, psc, mnips, urged residents to remain calm, be law-abiding, and always report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest Police formation.

He appealed to members of the public to partner with the Police in upholding law, order, and justice while rejecting all forms of mob violence.
