The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, N-HYPPADEC, has called for increased funding to mitigate flood, carryout interventions and deliver more impactful projects across vulnerable communities in its mandate areas.
The Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa made the call at the opening of a three-day Management Consultative Meeting with State Coordinators and Area Officers in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Alhaji Yelwa who commended the Federal Government for the recent approval of about N80 billion to tackle flood-related challenges, maintained that additional funding would strengthen N-HYPPADEC’s capacity to respond to the developmental needs of hydroelectric power-producing communities.
He stated that the Commission which was meant to receive ten percent of revenue of hydroelectric power generation companies, still rely largely on annual budgetary allocation, and collaboration with States Government.
Alhaji Yelwa who explained that N-HYPPADEC engages in regular flood sensitization campaigns, said that the Commission had begun construction of houses for victims of flood disasters in its catchment areas.
He also said that the Commission had made significant progress in its agricultural drive and empowerment schemes backed with provision of equipment.
The Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC also underscored the importance of staff welfare, discipline and dedication to achieving the agency’s mandate and warned that habitual absentees would face the “No Work No Pay” policy.

Earlier, the Director of Finance and Administration, Dr Jimoh Gabi emphasized the need to ensure that projects are properly planned, executed and monitored to maximize value for host communities.
The quarterly three-day consultative meeting would review the Commission’s operations, strengthen coordination and align strategies for improved service delivery.
Participants said that the meeting would enable them share experiences, address operational challenges and reinforce the commission’s development objectives.
N-HYPPADEC operates in ten hydroelectric power-producing States including Kwara, Niger, Kogi, Kaduna, Kebbi and Nassarrawa.
