A swift response by the Kwara State Fire Service has averted what could have been a major fire outbreak in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at about 4:56 a.m. at a building located on Ijoro Street, off Asa-Dam Road, housing a two-bedroom apartment and seven shops.

Reports indicate that only one of the shops was affected by the fire.

In a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the service, Hassan Hakeem, firefighters arrived promptly at the scene and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other shops and the adjoining residential building.

Items destroyed in the affected shop included grinding machines, foodstuffs, and other valuables, while preliminary findings point to a power surge as the likely cause of the fire.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, advised residents and business owners to adopt safety measures such as installing surge protectors, avoiding overloading of electrical outlets, and conducting regular checks on electrical systems.

The Fire Service has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to keep fire extinguishers readily available to tackle emergencies at an early stage.
