The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Adekimi Ojo, has pledged support for the safety of students at the Kwara State University KWASU, Malete, as part of collaborative efforts to tackle a surge in robberies and housebreaking incidents around private hostels.

CP Ojo gave the assurance during an official visit to the university community, where he held a strategic engagement with the university’s management, student leaders, local vigilantes, and residents.

He also inspected hostels that have recently been affected by security breaches.

The visit comes amid rising concerns over attacks targeting off-campus students, prompting the university to introduce a series of new security measures.

Welcoming the police delegation, KWASU Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaykh Luqman Alade Jimoh, expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership between the institution and law enforcement, singling out the efforts of the Malete Divisional Police Officer.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaykh Luqman Alade Jimoh, explained that, the recent attacks on students is deeply troubling and critical steps internally to address them.

Among the newly introduced security policies are mandatory engagement of private vigilante services by all hostel owners, with students advised to avoid non-compliant facilities.

A ban on commercial motorcycle (Okada) operations beyond 10:00 PM, compulsory closure of campus-based shops by 11:00 PM and restriction of generator usage by students after midnight.

Professor Jimoh also commended local community leaders for their ongoing support toward ensuring campus safety.

In his response, CP Ojo applauded the university’s proactive stance and promised to increase police visibility around the Malete axis.

He further assured stakeholders of operational support to enforce the newly introduced rules.

The Police Commissioner condemned the unauthorized phone searches by officers, describing the act as illegal and a breach of human rights.

“No policeman has the right to randomly search students’ phones on the street. Such behaviour is unlawful and disciplinary action will be taken against any officer found guilty,” he declared.

The visit also featured direct interactions with affected students and members of the community security network.

At the Malete Police Division, CP Ojo encouraged officers and vigilante members to remain committed, promising ongoing logistical and operational support.

The engagement underscores the Kwara State Police Command’s dedication to strengthening its collaboration with academic institutions, ensuring that education in the state thrives in a safe and peaceful environment.
