In a symbolic and inspiring gesture, Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, on Monday temporarily handed over his office to 14-year-old Joy Ogah, a teenage advocate for girl-child education.

The event, which took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, marked a key moment in the campaign for girl-child empowerment and education under the Tinubu administration.

As the “One-Day Vice President,” Ogah delivered an address highlighting the importance of inclusive education, the protection of girls’ rights, and the provision of basic school amenities such as sanitation, nutrition, and safe learning environments.

“When girls are protected, peace becomes possible,” she declared. “I may be Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”

Vice President Shettima, before symbolically handing over to Ogah, reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to girl-child education.

He commended ongoing government efforts such as the National School Feeding Programme and applauded First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her consistent advocacy for women and children’s welfare.

He recalled that during her tenure in the Senate, the First Lady was an active voice on issues relating to girl-child education and women’s rights.

The occasion was organized in partnership with PLAN International, an organization dedicated to advancing child rights and equality for girls.

The delegation, led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, revealed that PLAN International has supported over 11 million Nigerian children through initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, and child protection.

Ogah’s one-day tenure as Vice President stands as a powerful reminder of the need to empower young girls to lead, dream, and participate actively in nation-building.
