Ease of Doing Business: Kwara govt trains judges on Small Claims Court practices

A two day capacity building sessions for District Court judges in Kwara State for Small Claims Courts to complement the State Ease of Doing Business efforts has been held in Ilorin, the State Capital.

The Small Claims Courts were approved and established by Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration, to fast-track trials of cases affecting the business community in Kwara State.

The two-day workshop gave insights into the concept and how justice could be served on small claims offenders in quick time.

The technical session was organised by the Kwara State Ease of Doing Business Council, headed by the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru.

In an address, the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru, explained that the establishment and effective operation of Small Claims Courts is critical in fostering an enabling environment for businesses.

She noted that the courts were designed to provide quick, efficient, and cost-effective resolution of commercial disputes, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Commissioner said that the workshop is in line with the objectives of State Action on Business Enabling Reforms, SABER, – a Federal Government initiative that is being implemented in collaboration with the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, PEBEC, and the World Bank.

Dr. Hauwa Nuru commended Governor AbdulRazaq for continually creating a supportive environment that enables legal and institutional reforms to thrive.

Addressing the session, Justice Nureni Kuranga said that Small Claims Courts are recognised by the Nigerian Constitution to provide simple and cost-effective services, with cases being decided within limited time.

Justice Kuranga, who recommended that some Area Court judges be designated as small claims court judges, advised that the Bar and the Bench should have an MOU to minimise technicalities in the system.
