Fuel Subsidy Removal: Kwara Govt Purchases 100 Electric Motorbikes For Easy Movements
100 electric motorcycles have been purchased by the Kwara State Government to aid public transportation in mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The State Commissioner of Works and Transports, Engr Abdulquawiy Olododo stated this at the quarterly inter-ministerial press briefing held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Finance, Ilorin, Kwara State Capital.
Engr Abdulquawiy Olododo, who noted that the government is doing all possible best to bring succor to the masses, highlighted some of the achievements of the government under his ministry in the last four months.
According to the Commissioner, the state is awaiting delivery of the 100 electric motorcycles, which were purchased after official opening of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion workshop and gas station.
“Kwara State has been able to commission a CNG conversion workshop and gas station, the first of its kind in the country in line with the Presidential initiative on CNG to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
“His Excellency through the Ministry has procured 100 electric motorcycles, which the ministry is awaiting delivery in the coming days.”
Engr Abdulquawiy Olododo represented by the Director of Civil Engineering, Engr. Akanbi Mashood also hinted that the State Government through his Ministry had completed not less than 75 road projects with another 52 ongoing including rehabilitation, re-construction, interlocking, and beautification.
Also the Commissioner of Environment, Mrs Musa Nafiasat Buge, highlighted some of the activities and achievements of her Ministry, saying that the state is now experiencing a new look in terms of cleanliness.
She stressed that 18-point new strategies have been designed and worked on to improve performance in waste management in the state and curb indiscriminate refuse disposal.
“We are already noticing the effect of implementing these new strategies. Our road medians are being freed of refuse while the larger waste collection bins usually constituting nuisances have been removed from roundabouts.
Mrs Musa Nafiasat Buge, also emphasized that the effective enforcement through the recently inaugurated task force has been of great help in achieving results and also generating revenue to the state purse through payment of fines by defaulters.
“The internally generated revenue of the state through fines and penalties paid by offenders have also impacted tremendously on the IGR accruable to the state.
“The sum of fifty thousand naira is now being paid as fines following the review of fees payable by offenders and No fewer than 100 persons have been fined and arraigned before the Magistrate within the last 2 months of commencing the environmental task force.”
She confirmed that the ministry has raked in five million naira (N5m) as at last checked in last month.
The Commissioner also made it known that the activities of the task force on forestry-related matters have been suspended to address grey areas in their operations, adding that this will also add up to state IGR when resumed back.
The event was anchored by the Commissioner for Communications, Bola Olukoju with other Commissioners and some heads of government agencies and parastatals in attendance.
