The Managing Director of the Anambra State ICT Agency, Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, says equipping young people with digital skills is essential for their survival in today’s fast-changing job market.

Speaking on the agency’s role, Agbata said the ICT Agency is not only digitizing governance but also providing digital infrastructure to support innovation, skills development, and employability in line with Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of a livable and prosperous Anambra.

“No meaningful transformation is possible without strong digital infrastructure,” he said. “If you cannot access the internet, you cannot work, learn, or even pay for services. Our role is to ensure that the right infrastructure is in place to enable innovation and improve ease of doing business.”

Agbata urged young people to adapt quickly to technological changes, noting that employers’ needs are shifting rapidly as artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity dominate the modern workspace.

“AI is now an enabler across industries—from writing and design to broadcasting. Young people must evolve to remain relevant,” he warned.

He acknowledged that access to digital tools remains a major challenge, with the cost of laptops and devices beyond the reach of many youths. Recalling his own experience, Agbata said he began his tech journey with a laptop bought from a loan from his father after a failed business.

“Beyond cost, discipline is key. Many young people are distracted. Without focus, it’s difficult to learn and grow in tech,” he added.

The ICT boss highlighted the urban–rural digital divide, saying rural areas still lack reliable internet and connectivity.

He called for deliberate partnerships between government and the private sector to bridge the gap and expand opportunities.

Agbata also stressed the need for collaboration to sustain progress. “Even Silicon Valley thrives on partnerships between government, private sector, and academia. We must make technology attractive for private investment,” he said.

Encouraging youths to seize emerging opportunities, Agbata said, “Technology has opened up endless possibilities. The question is—what are you doing with the tools in your hand?”
